Universal columns have widths that are almost equal to their depths, meaning columns can withstand loads across their vertical axis only unlike universal beams (I-beams) that can withstand loads along their entire length.
The reduced depth in universal columns makes them ideal as load-bearing members in projects where height is a limiting factor.
